Welcome to the 25th SFEE congress
The 25th International Congress of the French Society for Scottish Studies (SFEE) will be held from Thursday 12 to Saturday 14 November 2026 at Université de Lorraine (campus Lettres et Sciences Humaine, Nancy)

The campus is unfortunately undergoing renovation works and is currently adorned with a few scaffolds — not visible in the non-contractual photograph taken before the work began. We are nevertheless delighted to welcome you in premises that will have been very recently renovated, so that we should be able to withstand any early cold snap or late heatwave without difficulty.The congress, entitled “Scotland and the In-Between”, invites reflection on the many forms of passage, transition and mediation that have shaped Scottish history, literature, arts, language and culture.
Traditionally perceived as a territory of thresholds and borders — between islands and continent, North and South, national distinctiveness and British belonging — Scotland lends itself particularly well to an exploration of the “in-between” as a dynamic space of creation, negotiation and transformation.
The “in-between” may refer to a geographical position — between Highlands and Lowlands, land and sea, periphery and centre — as well as to a linguistic or identitarian stance — between Gaelic, Scots and English, local traditions and external influences — or to a symbolic space — between tradition and modernity, local and global, real and imaginary.
By exploring these dynamics of in-betweenness, the conference will examine how Scotland — often perceived as a culture of thresholds, margins and passages — reflects on and stages otherness, encounter and transformation.
